Self-Efficacy in an Open Learning EnvironmentDavid A BrownEmpire State College Watters (2013) states, "In the Fall of 2011, Stanford University offered three of its engineering courses--Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and the Introduction to Databases--for free online" (p. 28). While not the first recorded implementation of the MOOC learning environment, this was one that brought the MOOC and free online learning to the forefront of the media. Watters (2013) continues, "The allure .... 2013-12-24T20:53:00.003-08:00 [Comment]

The Efficacy of the #Metaliteracy MOOC
Dave Brown, Dave's Journey Through Metacognitive Analysis, December 5, 2013
Schneider (2013) asks in regards to MOOCs, "If these massive courses are at least as good as the big courses that have long been staples in many collegiate institutions, why not cut to the chase and let students count MOOCs toward their degree requirements" (para 2)? This is a valid question to ask with the advent of online learning and the ever growing presence of MOOCs at a number of schools. In my mind a big part of looking at the degree worthiness of the MOOC goes hand-in-hand .... 2013-12-05T09:19:00.002-08:00 [Comment]

Digital Storytelling and Further Assessment
Dave Brown, Dave's Journey Through Metacognitive Analysis, November 13, 2013
With the previous presentation, there was a big emphasis on digital storytelling and the ways it is currently being utilized. We are now looking at storytelling as something bigger than it initially has been on the web. The days of stories being told around the campfire are becoming the days where individuals gather on the web to share stories and build off of other stories. With sites like the story in five frames or the concept of the two second story, there are many ways that people are .... 2013-11-13T13:13:00.001-08:00 [Comment]

Visual Literacy and Metacognition
Dave Brown, Dave's Journey Through Metacognitive Analysis, October 28, 2013
Last week there was a very interesting presentation on Visual Literacy. I believe that this can have a direct impact on Metaliteracy. When we look at the information around us, we interpret it based on the way it is laid out before us, so in this sense we are truly able to influence the way an idea is perceived by action of presentation. I compare this to a statistics class I took while getting my Associate's degree. The teacher said that 98% of all stats are made up including this one. I .... 2013-10-28T09:00:00.001-07:00 [Comment]

Metaliteracy in the Global Community
Dave Brown, Dave's Journey Through Metacognitive Analysis, October 11, 2013
It has been a few weeks since I posted and in that time there has been much discussion in regards to open learning in the presence of #metaliteracy and the concept of #metaliteracy in the global community. As time moves forward there is a continued push by many for open learning and open educational resources. Mark McBride defined open educational resources as being:any kind of teaching materialoffering free and unfettered accessallowing free permission to engage in the 4RsI believe that open .... 2013-10-11T11:45:00.000-07:00 [Comment]

Metacongition and Metaliteracy: Understandings To Date
Dave Brown, Dave's Journey Through Metacognitive Analysis, September 20, 2013
Char Booth told us in a Blackboard Collaborate presentation that metacognition is an understanding of ones own thinking processes. This is something that begins around the age of four (depending on many factors), and is dependent upon development, cultural social and even mentoring or instructive factors. Simply put we are lifelong learners and part of that ultimate learning, that metacognitive learning, is to analyze how our brain takes in information.I believe that in the whole process of .... 2013-09-20T08:47:00.001-07:00 [Comment]

Introducions and Intentions
, Dave's Journey Through Metacognitive Analysis, September 7, 2013
I wanted to welcome everyone to my blog and thank you all for my journey into learning more about #metaliteracy. I thoroughly enjoyed the introduction that we received through Blackboard Collaborate as this is a class concerning social interaction. You can do a lot when you learn about a subject by yourself, but it is my opinion that some of the best learning opportunities come out during group work. Before I get too much further into this discussion I want to tell you a little bit about .... 2013-09-06T13:23:00.002-07:00 [Comment]
